Visits Dr. Getie Gelaye

May, 2010 – Dr. Getie Gelaye, Amharic language lecturer and a specialist on the oral literature of Ethiopia from the University of Hamburg, was our guest. He presented two lectures on "The Poetic Traditions of Azmari in Ethiopia" and "Qene and Sem enna Werq (Wax and Gold), Ethiopian Poetry in Amharic, Definitions, Possible Techniques and Mechanisms of Analysis."

Meeting with journalists

October, 2010 – Journalists from three East African countries came to visit our Department. They came from Kenya ("The Star" and BBC Kenya), Uganda ("The Monitor") and Rwanda ("The New Times Publication"). They were interested in our academic life, studying conditions and African interests and studies at the University of Warsaw.

Days of Africa

Our department organised an event under the name “Days of Africa” on 4th to 6th May. Many lectures, open language courses and discussions took place during the event. We hosted many foreign and Polish guests, including Prof. S. Baldi from Naples, Prof. P. J. Jaggar from London, Dr. Abdourahmane Diallo from Frankfurt, Dr. George Alao, Dr. Jean de Dieu Karangwa and Dr. Delombera Negga from Paris, MP John Godson and Dr. Grzegorz Waliński.

Meeting with the delegation of parliamentarians from African countries

July, 2011 - On July 25th, 2011, The Department of African Studies had an honour of hosting a delegation of MPs from several African countries who came to Warsaw as participants of the conference African Development Cooperation Strategies towards the Millennium Development Goals – Lessons from the New EU Member States organised by the Polish Parliament and the AWEPA association.

The Body in Language: Lexicon, Metaphor, Grammar and Culture

October, 2011 - The Department of African Studies in cooperation with the University of Cologne organised a Conference The Body in Language: Lexicon, Metaphor, Grammar and Culture that took place at the University of Warsaw on October 21-22. The conference welcomed over 60 participants from around the world. The plenary talks were given by the following distinguished speakers: Alexandra Aikhenvald from James Cook University, Bernd Heine from the University of Cologne and Maarten Mous from the University of Leiden.
