Library

The library of Department of African Languages and Cultures has a collection of almost 10 thousand books as well as 500 journal and magazine titles. The library’s collection dates back to 1950 when Chair of Semitic studies was founded by prof. Stefan Strelcyn as a part of the Oriental Institute, University of Warsaw. Apart from books and journals, the library maintains special collection of maps, CDs and videos with African music, films and photographs. The profile of the collection corresponds with to the central focus of the Department and chief interests of the faculty, i.e. linguistics, literature, history, ethnology and art, ant he main languages thought at the Department. The library holds the largest and the most valuable Ethiopian collection in Poland consisting of books, journals, manuscripts, and records of international congresses and conferences concerning Ethiopian studies. Another part of the library collection consists of books documenting the earliest contacts between Europe and Africa, including descriptions of travelers’ visits to Africa from the first half of the 20th century. The catalogue of books and journals is available through traditional paper files as well as through a VTLS system. The library also has a special catalogue containing the table of contents of most its journals.
